Beginning on October 7th, Hillsboro Area Hospital will be providing free mammograms to women who are uninsured or under-insured. Mammogram Mondays are sponsored by the Regional Cancer Partnership of Illinois, with funding provided by the Memorial Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.
The latest technology for breast cancer detection is 3D digital breast imaging. This technology produces three-dimensional images of the breast from multiple angles and with more detail, improving physicians’ ability to detect cancer early and the accuracy in pinpointing tumor size and location. Because of this technology, Hillsboro Area Hospital has decreased the additional view rate by nearly 80 percent since using 3D digital mammography.
"Mammogram Mondays" appointments are required. No walk-ins are available. Mammogram Mondays appointments are available on each Monday in October (October 7, 14, 21, and 28).
Educational materials will also be available at Hillsboro Area Hospital including information on general breast health and how to perform breast self-exams.
The National Cancer Institute recommends that women age 40 or older have screening mammograms every one to two years. Screening mammograms are for patients who do not have symptoms or who have not detected any abnormalities.
