Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that can affect men and women. It presents no symptoms until you break a bone—or get a bone density screening.

A bone density scan determines the strength of your bones as well as your risk level of developing osteoporosis. If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia—a precursor to osteoporosis—your physician can help create a plan to maintain and build bone strength.

Risk factors for developing osteoporosis:

  • Being female
  • Smoking
  • Alcoholism
  • Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, blood thinners, thyroid medicines and anti-depressants
  • Not getting enough exercise
  • A diet low in calcium and vitamin D
